Writer Claims Credit for CNN Hacking Threat; Says It Was 'Joke'

By    |   Wednesday, 31 Dec 2014 06:49 PM

David Garrett, Jr., a writer on homeland security for Knoxville, Tennessee's version of The Examiner, says he was behind the hacking threat to CNN being investigated by the FBI and reported on by multiple news outlets, but he said he wrote the post only as a joke.

Mediaite reported Wednesday afternoon that Garrett had taken credit for the posting on Pastebin, a codesharing website also popular with hackers because it allows for anonymous postings.

Garrett confessed on Twitter and Facebook he was behind the Pastebin post that claimed to be from the Guardians of Peace (GOP), the same group that claimed credit for hacking into Sony Pictures computer system over its release of the "The Interview."

That post mocked media coverage of the Sony hacking scandal, and included the line, "You have 24 hours to give us the Wolf," an apparent reference to CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer.
Garrett has a Facebook account using the name Don Cornelius, in which he explained his actions:

"Serious: My anonymous posting was just mentioned in an FBI letter.

"See, what I did was, I took the message CNN claimed the hackers posted on pastebin. And there was no proof it was them. So I took it and replaced every mention of FBI with CNN. As a joke. And then, of course, I had to add Wolf Blitzer or it wouldn’t be complete. Then all these so-called 'journalists' don’t get my humor.

"And it … kills me that some of the news outlets aren’t mentioning how my CNN post was almost an exact replica of the original message."

Garrett said on Twitter he had informed the FBI his post was a joke.

Here is the original Pastebin post that led to the hubbub:

"By GOP"
"The result of investigation by CNN is so excellent that you might have seen what we   were doing with your own eyes."
  "We congratulate you success."
"CNN is the BEST in the world."

"You will find the gift for CNN at the following address."

  "Enjoy!"

"P.S. You have 24 hours to give us the Wolf."
