Former NBC News anchor Brian Williams will return to the air Sept. 22 by anchoring MSNBC live coverage of Pope Francis's first visit to the U.S.
NBCUniversal's cable network is making changes to its daytime lineup to focus more on live breaking news and less on opinion-based shows. The network confirmed the date for Williams's return Thursday.
NBC suspended Williams from the "NBC Nightly News" anchor job seven months ago for embellishing his portrayal of reporting in Iraq in 2003. In June, NBCUniversal said Williams will become MSNBC anchor of breaking news and special reports and his temporary replacement, Lester Holt, would get the permanent anchor chair for "NBC Nightly News."
In a June interview with "Today" show host Matt Lauer, Williams blamed his ego for exaggerating stories and said he didn't intend to mislead anyone.
The decision by the network marked an end to a painful chapter for NBC News and Williams, one of the most recognizable figures in TV journalism.
