World Emoji Day was a top trend across the Internet on Thursday and people celebrated the world over, with everyone from celebrities to companies participating in the fun.
The event,
coordinated by WorldEmojiDay.com and
@WorldEmojiDay on Twitter, falls on July 17 because the calendar emoji on Apple products displays that date.
The celebration began in earnest down under, as Australia's day begins before the rest of the globe's.
World Emoji Day did not go off without a hitch, however, as some were confused by the calendar emojis displayed by Twitter and Android devices.
On Twitter, for instance, the calendar emoji is dated July 15 — which matches the date Twitter launched in 2006. Likewise, July 17 is the date Apple launched iCal.
In the end the tidal wave of social media posts crashed down on July 17, and all was well.
Gathered below are highlight from those who celebrated on Twitter using the "#WorldEmojiDay" hashtag.
