Tesla Semi-Truck Spotted Ahead of Reveal?

Tesla's electric semi-truck may have already been spotted ahead of its planned Oct. 26 reveal, after a photo was taken of the suspected vehicle in an undisclosed location in California and posted on social media, Fox News reported.

The photo of the semi being hauled was first posted on Reddit before it was taken down, but reposted by another user, Fox News said.

"The design is certainly futuristic, especially in contrast to the 'classic' look of the tractor it's being hauled by," the website Electrek wrote about the photo. "It's possible that the short nose will rankle a few of the more 'traditional' types, but that's nothing new for Tesla given the design revisions they've gone through over the years in an attempt to make the public more used to cars without grills."

The website said the design suggests that Tesla is counting on aerodynamic performance to cut down on battery cost and weight while increasing range.

Fox News said the batteries for the truck could be housed in a section behind the cab. The batteries in Tesla car models are on the floor of the vehicle, noted the network.

Tesla's chief executive Elon Musk had promised to come up with a heavy-duty semi-truck that can compete with conventional diesel trucks, which can travel as long as 1,000 miles on one tank of fuel, Reuters reported.

Tesla's current semi-truck range of 200 to 300 miles suggests the company may be focusing on regional hauling, the news service said in August.

"I'm not going to count them out for having a strategy for longer distances or ranges, but right out of the gate I think that's where they’ll start," said Scott Perry, the chief technology officer and chief procurement officer for Miami-based Ryder System, Inc.

Perry told Reuters that he met with Tesla officials earlier to talk about technology at Tesla's manufacturing facility in Fremont, California.
