Strangers paid for a veteran's welcoming-home meal he and his friends were enjoying at an Applebee's, footing a nearly $300 bill in a show of gratitude.

Army Spec. Scott Stranne, 21, who recently returned from Afghanistan, was with a group of friends at the Applebee's Neighborhood Grill in Lacey, Washington last Thursday when the waiter approached and said their meal was paid for, CBS News reported.

Kyle Davis, one of Stranne's friends, said he thought the group was about to be admonished for making too much noise at the restaurant.

"We were all just hanging out, trying to keep quiet and keep it down," Davis told CBS News. "We were having a good time.

The waiter, though, handed Stranne the check showing the $260 tab was already paid for.

"This couple wanted to anonymously donate $300 toward your meal," the waiter explained, "Right now, it's $260."

"I got chills, it was just awesome," Stranne told CBS News. "An instant sense of gratitude overcame me. We never expected anything. We greatly, greatly appreciate what they did. At a time like this it gives everyone a new faith in humanity. There's still good out there."

Natasha Conners, the general manager at the Applebee's, told KOMO-TV she had never seen such an act of generosity there before.

"Everyone was in shock, everyone was in complete shock," Conners said.

She declined to identify the generous couple other than that they insisted on paying the bill for Stranne and his friends.

"(I) just put it on Facebook to try and find them to thank them," Stranne told KOMO-TV. "Because we never got the opportunity to properly thank them."

The Army deployed Stranne to his first tour of duty in Afghanistan on March 17, CBS News said. The Applebee's gathering was a reunion of a group he rode motorcycles with before he left.

"It was like a welcome home thing, so I could see everyone," Stranne told CBS News.

Many shared their feelings about the act on social media.
