A software glitch at a number of Starbucks locations in the U.S. and Canada meant some customers could only pay with cash after the outage rendered electronic payment systems useless, although some locations simply gave out coffee for free.
The outage began Monday night and may have originated from an update to store registers, a statement from Starbucks said. It was not related to the “WannaCry” ransomware attack that infected more than 300,000 computers around the world, Reuters reported.
“A limited number of locations remain offline, and we are working swiftly to resume full operations in each of these stores,” the statement read, according to CNBC, and added that stores would remain open.
In some Starbucks locations, in-store registers were working but the mobile payment system was down, CNBC reported. An unknown number of stores were affected by the glitch.
Twitter users lamented the outage, but some praised Starbucks for giving out free coffee.
