Pastry Chef Resigns Via Icing on Cake; Photo Goes Viral

By    |   Wednesday, 17 April 2013 09:52 AM EDT

A pastry chef decided to quit his day job Monday by sending his employer a cake with his resignation letter written on it in icing, a photo of which (below) has now gone viral.

Chris Holmes, of Cambridgeshire, England, became a father recently and realized time was running out for him to pursue his dream of running a catering business. Holmes, 31, sent a sheet cake inscribed with his resignation to his bosses at London's Stansted Airport, where he worked as a Border Force agent.

"Having recently become a father I now realise (sic) how precious life is and how important it is to spend my time doing something that makes me and other people happy," Holmes wrote on top of the spiced carrot cake with pecans, sultanas, and coconut.

Known to his friends and customers as Mr. Cake, Holmes has worked with celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing in the past, and has been trying to build up his own business in his spare time over the past couple years.

"Timing-wise, it's quite a risk [to launch a business] with the economy as it is at the moment," Holmes told the Guardian. "But I have looked at the books time and again and every way I look at it, it is viable as a sole employment."

Following is the full text of Holmes' resignation.

To The Management, Border Force, Stansted:

Today is my 31st birthday and having recently become a father I now realise how precious life is and how important it is to spend time doing something that makes me, and other people, happy.

For that reasons, I hereby give notice of my resignation, in order that I may devote my time and energy to my family, and to my cake business, which has grown steadily over the past few years.

I wish the organisation and my colleagues the best for the future and I remind you that, if you enjoy this cake, you can order more at www.mrcake.co.uk.

Sincerely,
Chris Holmes (Mr. Cake)
