Rapper Kanye West jumped on stage as Beck was accepting his Grammy for Album of the Year, but refrained from grabbing the mic like he did during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards five years ago.
Beck, the seasoned singer-songwriter who recently staged a strong comeback with his new "Morning Phase" album, didn't let West ruin his big moment, however, and even asked him to "come back" as the rapper turned around and returned to his seat.
The whole episode was a repeat of the 2009 VMAs, when West protested Beyonce's loss to Swift by interrupting her with his now infamous line "I'ma let you finish — but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!"
Beyonce and husband Jay-Z looked horrified as West strode toward the stage, but soon erupted in laughter as he turned around and marched back off — seeming to make a joke. Many audience members looked unsure of whether West was serious or joking, but after the show an interview revealed he likely wasn't ribbing anybody.
"I don’t even know what [Beck] said. I just know that, the Grammys, if they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. We aren’t going to play with them no more," he told E!.
"Beck needs to respect artistry, he should have given his award to Beyoncé," he explained. "You all knew what it meant when 'Ye stepped on that stage."
After his big win, Beck
told Us Weekly that he wasn't at all upset about West jumping on stage.
"I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?" said Beck. "I thought she was going to win. Come on, she's Beyonce!"
Asked about West's implication that Beyonce is a true artist and he isn't, Beck said "You can't please everybody, man."
