A shooting Wednesday at a high school near Spokane, Washington, left one person dead and three others injured.

Police have the shooter in custody. The three injured are students at Freeman High School south of Spokane in Rockford, and are in satisfactory condition at a local hospital, the Spokesman-Review reported.

The shooting took place just after 10 a.m. local time. Dozens of vehicles responded to the scene, and parents also came to the school to make sure their children were safe.

The public was asked not to use Highway 27 so that emergency vehicles could get through. The high, middle, and elementary schools, which are located close together, were put on lockdown until they could be cleared by going from classroom to classroom, the Review reported.

Middle school students were having a late start and were just arriving at school when the shooting took place and the lockdown began, the Review reported. The lockdown was lifted at about 11:25 a.m.

Freeman High School has 331 students, according to The Seattle Times. It is located in the Freeman School District, in a small suburb of Spokane.

“You never think about something happening like this at a small school,” said Cheryl Moser, the parent of a freshman at the high school, the Review reported. Moser said her son called her from a classroom after hearing the shots and sounded scared.

Neighboring school districts including Spokane and Central Valley also imposed lockdowns as a precaution.
