Gwyneth Paltrow has used bees – bee stings to be exact – as one of her beauty regimens, the Academy Award-winning actress said Monday.
Paltrow admitted to The New York Times
that she's a "guinea pig to try everything" when it comes to beauty treatments, saying that she also loves acupuncture.
"But generally, I'm open to anything," Paltrow told the Times. "I've been stung by bees. It's a thousands of years old treatment called apitherapy. People use it to get rid of inflammation and scarring. It's actually pretty incredible if you research it. But, man, it's painful."
The American Apitherapy Society website says
that apitherapy is an alternative form of health care.
"Apitherapy encompasses the use of bee hive products including honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom," stated the website. "Apitherapy is used to treat many illnesses and to alleviate pain from injuries both chronic and acute."
The apitherapy website stated the society reaches "beyond traditional Western medicine helping others to help themselves in attaining better health through a holistic approach in harmony with the bee hive, a true gift of nature."
While Paltrow also touched on what she uses for skin care, makeup, fragrances, and hair, her comments on purposeful bee stings received the bulk of the attention on social media, naturally.
