Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday the NFL is "walking on thin ice" after the league threatened Abbott that the state could lose consideration for hosting future Super Bowl games if it passes legislation to prevent transgender people from using the bathroom of their chosen gender.

“The NFL needs to concentrate on playing football and get the heck out of politics,” Abbott told conservative radio host Glenn Beck. “For some low-level NFL adviser to come out and say that they are going to micromanage and try to dictate to the state of Texas what types of policies we’re going to pass in our state, that’s unacceptable.”

Abbott was responding to a statement by league spokesman Brian McCarthy, who said Friday, “If a proposal that is discriminatory or inconsistent with our values were to become law there, that would certainly be a factor considered when thinking about awarding future events,” ESPN reported.

The NFL has picked sites for Super Bowl games through 2021, and none of those are planned for Texas, ESPN noted, but the Super Bowl was just held in Houston. Three Super Bowls have been played in the state since 2004, second only to Florida.

Texas’ bill would require people to use the bathrooms that match the gender on their birth certificates.

The bill is strongly supported by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who confirmed Friday after the NFL’s comments that he was standing firm on the bill and planned on “making sure that every Texan is welcomed” at sporting events, ESPN said.

The Texas bill is similar to a North Carolina law that led the NBA to move the all-star game out of the state and the NCAA to relocate seven championship events to other states, ESPN reported.
