More than two-thirds of Americans still believe the U.S. economy is in recession and most are not optimistic about the ability of the nations’ leaders to do anything about it, according to a new Harris poll.
The survey of 2,462 adults conducted online Sept. 12-19 found that seven out of 10 Americans — 69 percent — believe the country has never come out of the recession that began in late 2007.
Just one in five Americans — about 21 percent — give President Barack Obama positive marks on his handling of the economy, while 79 percent give his job performance on pocketbook issues a negative rating.
Making matters worse for the president as he faces re-election in 2012 is that 58 percent of respondents who identified themselves as Democrats and 64 percent who said they were liberals give him a negative rating on the economy as well.
Overall, 76 percent of the respondents who identified themselves as GOP enthusiasts said they believe the country is still in recession, compared to 65 percent who identified themselves as Democrats.
