President Donald Trump's "covfefe" tweet a little past midnight on Wednesday set off an Internet storm overnight, with many believing it was a misspelling of "coverage." Unperturbed, Trump later joined the kerfuffle and tweeted "enjoy."
The presidential tweet, which has since been deleted, was posted at 12:06 a.m. It read: "Despite the constant negative press covfefe," according to ABC News.
"Within an hour of the misspelled word going out in a tweet to his 31 million followers, 'covfefe' had become Twitter's No. 1 trending hashtag worldwide," said Jon Russell, the Asia-based writer for TechCrunch. "It is even trending in countries outside of the U.S.
"As you'd expect, Twitter users — one of the Internet's most enthusiastic meme-loving communities — seized on the error, which has become the source of much comedy."
The post was retweeted more than 120,000 times and liked 152,000 times by dawn on Wednesday.
By 3 a.m. Trump decided to "enjoy" the fun:
Trump's Twitter account has taken on a life of its own since he first used the social media site in 2009 to promote an appearance on "The Late Show with David Letterman," noted the BBC News.
Since then, the real estate mogul-turned-president has used the "RealDonaldTrump" account as his personal megaphone to tweet everything from updates on his former reality show "The Apprentice," family milestones, and opinions.
Merriam-Webster Twitter account could not resist the president's early morning offering with its own comedic comment, along with scores of others on social media.
