Cam Newton was dropped by yogurt maker Dannon as a product spokesman after the NFL quarterback was flagged publicly for disparaging a female reporter.

Dannon representative Michael Neuwirth said in a statement that the company was pulling back from using the Carolina Panthers star in advertisements, ESPN reported.

At a Wednesday news conference with the Panthers, Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue had asked about wide receiver Devin Funchess embracing the physicality of routes.

Newton responded, "It's funny to hear a female talk about routes," per ESPN.

"I was in that room, which held about 30 media members, and there was dead silence when Newton proclaimed 'It’s funny' – because actually it wasn't funny at all," Charlotte Observer columnist Scott Fowler said. "To state the obvious, this is 2017 and not 1967. All Rodrigue wanted to do on Wednesday was her job, and instead she found herself in the middle of a social media firestorm."

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy joined others in shaking their heads at Newton's remark, the Observer noted.

"The comments are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists who cover our league," McCarthy told the Observer. "They do not reflect the thinking of the league."

Dannon, though, became the first commercial sponsor to dump Newton over the comments.

"(Dannon is) shocked and disheartened at the behavior and comments of Cam Newton towards (Charlotte Observer reporter) Jourdan Rodrigue, which we perceive as sexist and disparaging to all women," Neuwirth said in the statement, per ESPN.

"It is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to fostering equality and inclusion in every workplace. It's simply not OK to belittle anyone based on gender. We have shared our concerns with Cam and will no longer work with him," he continued.

Newton's marketing agent, Carlos Fleming of WME/IMG, told ESPN, though, that the company did not sever its active endorsement deal with his client, "nor do they have the grounds to."

According to the James Palmer, of the NFL Network, Dannon said it was no longer using Newton in advertisement even though his contract was not terminated.

Newton, who has been a Dannon spokesman since 2015, also has endorsement deals with Under Armour and Gatorade, Sports Illustrated noted.
