The final Blood Moon full lunar eclipse of 2015, which will take place on the first night of the Jewish holiday of Sukkot on Monday, has sparked doomsday fears of catastrophes among some religious observers.
The three most recent Blood Moon occurrences began in April 2014 during the Passover, continued during Sukkot in October 2014, and appeared again during the
Passover in April 2015, according to the Times of Israel. These three, with the oncoming fourth one next week, comprise a “tetrad” pattern.
NASA predicts that this rare tetrad phenomenon will not occur again until
2033, according to Business Insider.
Although NASA has already dismissed theories of asteroids striking the earth and other cataclysmic catastrophes, many religious groups are urging their followers to look seriously upon next week’s
Blood Moon lunar eclipse, International Business Times reported.
According to John Hagee, a popular American evangelical pastor, each blood moon occurrence throughout history has been linked to a time period “that begins with a tragedy and ends with a triumph” for the Jewish people, according to the Times of Israel. The Blood Moon lunar eclipse in 1492 marked Spain’s expulsion of the Jews, the 1948 eclipse heralded the establishment of the State of Israel, and the 1967 eclipse marked the Six Day War. These three were the last three blood moon tetrads.
Next Monday’s Blood Moon will also be the Harvest Moon, which occurs near the Autumnal equinox. It will be a “supermoon” because the moon will be at its perigee, or its closest point to Earth during this month. The last total supermoon eclipse occurred in 1982, and this lunar eclipse will also be a Blood Moon because the Earth will cast a shadow on the moon, causing the refracted light in the atmosphere to reflect upon the moon with a red-orange color.
Although very few people are actually predicting the apocalypse or the Second Coming on Monday, this latest tetrad occurs at the end of a Shemitah cycle during a Jubilee period, and thus holds enormous symbolism for the Jewish people, according to the International Business Times.
