Hillary Clinton's popular vote lead increased to 1.5 million as states wrapped up counting provisional and absentee ballots, but the results won't change because the added votes don't affect the overall map that gave Donald Trump 290 electoral votes to her 232. He needed 270 to win.
The Atlantic said the vote totals could put Clinton "within striking distance" of President Barack Obama's 2012 turnout.
The Associated Press count on Saturday had Clinton at 63,390,669 votes and Donald Trump at 61,820,845 votes, a difference of 1,569,824, according to ABC News.
"We probably have about seven million votes left to count," David Wasserman of Cook Political Report told The Atlantic. "A majority of them are on the coasts, in New York, California, and Washington. She should be able to win those votes, probably 2-1."
CNN and the AP have declined calling Michigan yet because of the closeness of that race.
The Detroit Free Press said Trump won the state by 13,107 votes out of 4,785,223 votes cast, according to the Michigan secretary of state's figure. Those votes, though, won't be certified until Tuesday.
Clinton's popular vote lead has led to at least one online petition targeting the Electoral College.
"Secretary Clinton won the popular vote and should be president," said a Change.org petition by Daniel Brezenoff, which has 4.5 million signatures. "Hillary won the popular vote. The only reason Trump 'won' is because of the Electoral College. But the Electoral College can actually give the White House to either candidate. So why not use this most undemocratic of our institutions to ensure a democratic result?"
Brezenoff conceded his petition has little chance of chance of changing minds, but was worth a shot, said the New York Daily News.
"Yes, I think it's a longshot, but I also think we're living in strange times," Brezenoff said. "If it was ever plausible, it's this year."
