116 References to God Found in State Constitutions

The constitutions of the 50 U.S. states contain 116 direct references to God. According to Pew Research Center analysis, all but four states include at least one such direct reference in their governing document.

Three of the other states — Colorado, Iowa, and Washington — have constitutions that "refer to a 'Supreme Being' or 'Supreme Ruler of the Universe.'" The fourth exception is Hawaii, whose "constitution makes reference to the divine only in its preamble, which states that the people of Hawaii are ‘grateful for Divine Guidance.'"

In addition to direct references to God, the state constitutions contain 81 other references to the almighty or similar terms.
