The Cruise Lines International Association reports that the cruise industry employs 956,597 people, who receive $38 billion in salaries.[1]

These employees will serve an estimated 25.8 million passengers in 2017 on 448 ships. Nearly half (11.5 million) of the passengers come from the U.S. Four other countries provide at least a million passengers: China (2.1 million), Germany (2.0 million), the United Kingdom (1.9 million), and Australia (1.3 million).

While cruising may bring up images of a long-ago era, it’s currently a growth industry. The number of passengers is up 62 percent in the past decade. Twenty-six new ships have been ordered this year, representing a total investment of $6.8 billion.

Perhaps because of the heavy U.S. passenger totals, more than a third of all cruise capacity (35 percent ) is found in the Caribbean. The Mediterranean boasts 18 percent of cruise capacity, while other European ports have 11 percent.[2]
