Israel Welcomes Hollywood

By    |   Friday, 28 February 2014 10:57 AM EST

In today’s era where perception is reality, one of the reasons Israel is so often maligned in the media is the poor effort Israel does of telling the story of the beleaguered Jewish state.

Israel doesn’t dedicate enough attention to vital initiatives that educate the media about what is really going on in the Middle East. It is indeed a David vs. Goliath situation — and Israel is the small guy fighting Arab giants. Israel is a young country and a justified cause is not enough to be right.

Israel has so much rich history and many incredible attractions, from the Bible to its beaches. As such, I was thrilled to learn that this week the Israeli government, together with the Jerusalem municipality, approved funding to encourage the shooting of mega-budget movie productions in Israel, as well as an international television series to be aired on NBC, and filmed in Jerusalem. This comprehensive, systematic “Public Relations machine” will help Israel’s brand worldwide.

The first funds, approximately $4 million, are being allocated to help develop Jerusalem’s film industry, and to “bring Israel in general and Jerusalem in particular to millions of TV and movie screens around the world.

This money will eventually help attract production for big-budget movies and it’s just great. There are so many amazing visuals in Israel from the beaches to the desert, biblical backdrop, winding alleys and these great scenes should be seen worldwide.

The more people see and understand Israel there’s no question that civilized people will see the good guys and identify more with Israel. (And naturally films will help tourism already at a record high.)

NBC is the first network to be funded by an Israeli grant, supposedly with an investment of tens of millions of dollars. The first company to benefit from this initiative is the American NBC network, which will begin shooting the detective "Dig", a detective show will take place in Jerusalem — and is be co-written by Gideon Raff of "Homeland."

As Israel’s Tourism Ministry rightly noted, "Israel offers the ideal set for filming international productions. The country offers every type of set backdrop that a director could wish for.” This initiative is a wonderful idea and will help educate media, bloggers, and digital media users.

The state of Israel is a Western democracy, with so much to offer the entire world. The more people see the people of Israel, the more they understand the challenges Israel faces.
