Call It a Criminal Conspiracy – Because That's What It Is

Tuesday, 30 January 2001 12:00 AM

Over the past eight years these people dragged their party through the muck and slime of the Clinton-Gore administration, all the while insisting that any suggestions that their leaders in the White House were anything less than pure and spotless as the driven snow were the rantings of crazed right-wingers.

They knew that was hogwash, of course, but there being honor even among thieves, they refrained from taking notice of even the worst outrages being perpetrated downtown at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Faced with the fact, now admitted under threat of prosecution, that the president of the United States committed felony perjury, they launched a vicious assault on Clinton's accusers, ranting and raving and often resorting to blackmail in a vain effort to prevent their congressional colleagues from doing their duty and impeaching the man for the crimes they knew he had committed.

In the Senate they lined up shoulder-to-shoulder to block conviction and allow this shameless miscreant to serve out his term of office and be free to do more grievous harm to this nation.

While this was going on they had the full support of the shameless mainstream media, which either ignored the shocking details of the Clintons' serial misbehavior or portrayed them as the fevered imagining of that notorious vast right-wing conspiracy that Hilllary Clinton and her odious henchman Sidney Blumenthal managed to blame for every catastrophe that has befallen mankind since the Fall.

Well, now the cat's out of the bag. With the departure of the real-life Snopes family from the White House, trailed by truckloads of loot, and the odor of last-minute unpardonable pardons lingering in their wake, the last traces of manufactured Hollywood glitter have at last vanished and the Clintons stand revealed as the conscienceless white-trash boors they are.

Their naked display of arrogance, having been accompanied by their patented brand of total disregard for even the outward appearance of dignity, has, with few notable exceptions, disgusted even the most subservient members of the media ... and even some members of the Democratic Party on the Hill.

With Sidney now gone (and busy arranging a reported $650,000 advance for a book about his time as the Clintons' most disreputable hatchet man) and what Dick Morris calls the Clinton secret police no longer able to tap into FBI files and other government dossiers, the threat of blackmail has been lifted, or at least moderated, and the more decent members of the congressional wing of the Democratic Party are now free to come out of the Clinton closet and admit that their former president is a low-class bum and that their leadership who supported and covered up for him is itself thoroughly corrupt.

That corruption is now being blatantly displayed in the case of the nomination of John Ashcroft to be attorney general of the United States. The Democrats, who rallied behind Janet Reno, one of the worst and most corrupt attorneys general in the history of this nation, turning a blind eye to her frequent refusals to enforce the law, especially when the president and his vice president were involved, have set their sights on one of the most thoroughly honest and decent men ever to serve in public life, and savaged him unmercifully.

In doing so they reveal their subservience to a sleazy confederacy of perverts, civil rights charlatans, ambulance-chasing trial lawyers, abortion industry titans, anti-religious fanatics, and Marxist special-interest groups upon whom they depend for major campaign donations and support.

More significantly, however, their naked fear of an incorruptibly honest man they know will rigidly but fairly enforce the nation's laws gives mute testimony to their real motive in opposing him with such fervor: their knowledge that many of the crimes committed by members of their party during the Clinton years will not go unexposed or even unpunished under John Ashcroft.

They realize that when he takes over at Justice, justice will be done. Rocks will be turned over, and the disgusting filth hidden beneath will be uncovered. Those heady eight years when everything illicit was licit, and everything deserving of condemnation praised, will be over, and many among them will be revealed for the miscreants they are.

Their days are numbered. Ashcroft will be confirmed. And because of their behavior, and the revelations of the true nature of the Clintons and their administration that are increasingly beginning to come to light, the nation will be able to observe firsthand what these people are and the depths into which they have dragged their party.

Some may view the whole Ashcroft matter as a low point in the Senate's history. In one sense they are correct. But in a larger sense this will one day be seen as a critical turning point in our history, as the beginning of the era when the present Democratic Party ceased to matter.

As I have written previously, there are good and decent men and women among the Democrats on Capitol Hill. They cannot help but be shocked and disheartened by what they see their leaders doing to a former Senate colleague they know and respect.

Watch how Senate Democrats vote on the Ashcroft nomination when it reaches the floor. It is becoming obvious that this has now become a matter of party discipline – the leadership wants a united party vote against Ashcroft. They won't get it, and the honest Democrats who defy their leadership are the hope of their party.

If some of these good people will face facts and admit they don't belong in such disreputable company, they'll do the right thing and switch parties. Don't think it's impossible. I'm sure many of them have about reached the point where they can no longer bear the stench arising out of the collective armpits of their leadership, or the subservience to the Godlessness of the far left being forced upon them by their party chieftains.

The Ashcroft confirmation battle could be the straw that breaks the donkey's back.
