President Donald Trump Saturday called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to end the legislative filibuster and move toward passing all legislation with a 51-vote majority, saying Democrats are "laughing" at their inability to pass legislation.
In his first tweet in a series of five, Trump said that it is "a JOKE" that "200 bills" are sitting in the Senate. He further claimed that eight Democrats are controlling the Senate and that "Many great Republican bills will never pass, like Kate's Law and complete Healthcare." The president also pushed McConnell and Senate Republicans to "get smart."
In the remainder of the tweets, Trump said Republicans "look like fools and are just wasting time."
The tweets came in the wake of Friday morning's crushing defeat of "skinny repeal" legislation, which narrowly lost after Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, John McCain of Arizona, and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, voted against the bill. Collins and Murkowski have been against repeal legislation all along, but McCain's decision came as a surprise to many.
McConnell in April said that he is committed to making no changes in the rules to end the filibuster, reports RollCall, and on Saturday, a spokesman for the Kentucky Republican said he has not changed his views.
