Rep. Steve King of Iowa questioned which group of people other than whites has contributed more to western civilization in an interview Monday.
During a panel discussion on MSNBC, Esquire's Charles Pierce said "old white people" are in charge of the GOP and the Republican National Convention is full of "loud, unhappy, dissatisfied white people."
King, a Republican, then replied: "This whole 'white people' business, though, does get a little tired, Charlie. I mean, I'd ask you to go back through history and figure out, where are these contributions that have been made by these other categories of people that you're talking about? Where did any other sub-group of people contribute to civilization?"
MSNBC host Chris Hayes interjected and asked, "than white people?"
King added, "than Western Civilization itself. It's rooted in western Europe, eastern Europe, and the United States of America, and every place where the footprint of Christianity settled the world. That's all of western civilization."
In June,
King called the Obama administration's decision to put Harriet Tubman on the front of the $20 bill "racist" and "sexist."
