Rick Perry: Trump Needs More Loyal People Around Him

President Donald Trump can stop the leaks dripping from the White House by pulling in people who are more loyal to him, Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry said Friday.

"Number one is to have a cadre of people around you that are loyal," the former Texas Governor told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" show.

"I will be pretty blunt about it — those who want to govern through leaking [should] go work somewhere else."

The president knows who the people who are loyal to him are, and as for the others, if they are "out gossiping, and passing along leaks is your idea of patriotism, I greatly disagree with you. Find another place to work."

Perry admitted he does not know where the leaks are coming from, "but if you care about this country, you need to help it move forward," said Perry. "This idea of a leak a day, the media obviously is greatly interested."

Trump, however, will "own those headlines" while setting a "very clear path forward for America being back in that position of leading the world," said Perry, including with "our friends in Saudi Arabia and Israel."

"Other Middle Eastern countries, [like] Jordan, are standing up with him and I think sending a powerful message of America's strength, this president's strength, and this president's focus," said Perry.

Perry also commented on the news that former Sen. Joe Lieberman may be Trump's pick to head the FBI, after show co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked if the Connecticut independent could be trusted since he at one time was a Democrat.

"I try to remind people Ronald Reagan was a Democrat once," said Perry. "I was a Democrat once. So that doesn't necessarily take you off the board. Loyalty isn't a partisan issue. Loyalty is an issue that you either have in your character or you don't."

Trump has come under fire, though, for reports claiming he asked former FBI Director James Comey to pledge his loyalty to him. The president denied that claim, but said he does not "think it would be a bad question to ask."

Perry also discussed plans to create an office dealing with the issue of veterans' health at the Department of Energy."

He said he's been working with VA Secretary David Shulkin, and other agencies will also coordinate efforts to support vets.

"The Million Vet Project is one that got started some months ago out of the VA, collecting blood of these veterans in turn analyzing them for their DNA so we can look into the future, if you will, look into their personal DNA and give them some advice and ideas what you may be facing later in life," said Perry.

There are a little over a half-million people in the program now, and the Department of Energy's supercomputers have been offered to help analyze the data, said Perry.

"We're focused on helping our vets as well as moving this country forward on the technology front," Perry said. "Our national labs are amazing jewels."
