The cost of healthcare will never decrease if Obamacare and its regulations are not repealed, according to Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky.
"The regulations add to the price and the regulations are what cause the … death spiral of Obamacare," Paul said Tuesday on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
The senator said that the House Republicans' American Health Care Act proposal pays for the death spiral, not fixes it.
"The Republican plan from the House doesn't fix the death spiral, just subsidizes it, throws a whole bunch of federal taxpayer money in there. What they don't really explain is, there's no federal money up here. We're $500 billion in the hole every year. We have a $20 trillion debt. Where does all this money come from to stabilize insurance?" Paul said.
Taxpayers should not give more money to insurance companies, the senator added. "I don't want to give any money to insurance companies. They make $15 billion a year. Why would the taxpayer give them a penny? So I'm not for that."
Paul said during the interview that he would not support the plans for the Senate healthcare bill as it stands. "My current impression is they're taking the House bill, and it's probably going to include more subsidies, probably going to include more federal money, and more federal involvement in health care. That's the wrong direction and that will lose me."
"I'm still open to voting for something, but it's got to get better, not worse," he said.
Senate Republicans are making an effort to moderate expectations about any replacement for Obamacare being voted on during the summer, according to a Monday report in Politico.
