Hillary Clinton has a 6-point lead over Donald Trump among likely voters ahead of the first presidential debate, an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows.

In the survey released Wednesday, here is the breakdown among likely voters in a four-way race:

  • Clinton: 43
  • Trump: 37
  • Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson: 9 percent
  • Green Party candidate Jill Stein: 3 percent

In a head-to-head matchup, Clinton expands her lead slightly:

  • Clinton: 48 percent
  • Trump: 41 percent

The poll was conducted by Democratic pollster Fred Yang and GOP pollster Bill McInturff.

"Donald Trump has closed the margin since August, but as we head towards the debate, still needs to push this campaign closer," McInturff told NBC News.

"The good news for him is the electorate narrowly agrees with him that America has lost ground and wants to see a change in direction."

The first presidential debate is set for Monday.

In a breakdown of all registered voters, Clinton leads Trump 42 percent to 37 percent – down from her 9-point lead in August, NBC News reported.

In a two-way race, Clinton's edge among registered voters is 48 percent to Trump's 41 percent – also down 9 points from August, according to NBC News.

The survey has an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points; among the likely voters sample, the margin of error is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
