President Donald Trump's decision to launch airstrikes against Syria garnered 57 percent approval from Americans, but they don't want any further unilateral action taken, according to a new CBS News poll.

Additional results, according to the survey:

  • Seventy percent say Trump should get approval from Congress for any future action in Syria.
  • More than 50 percent of Republicans think the president should get authorization.
  • Just 18 percent want ground troops used in Syria.

Further, the airstrike has buoyed Trump's approval rating, according to the poll, up to 43 percent. Independents were the driving force there; Trump jumped 8 points to 42 percent among independents.

Republicans hold higher confidence in the president in his future dealings with Syria, with 8 in 10 saying they believe in him, according to the poll.

This poll was conducted by telephone April 7-9 among a random sample of 1,006 adults nationwide. Data collection was conducted on behalf of CBS News by SSRS of Media, PA. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus 4 percentage points.
