A petition has been started urging the Trump administration to reinstate Spanish links on the official White House website.

The petition, which appears on the We The People section of the White House website, states that although 68 percent of native speakers of Spanish are also proficient in English, “previous administrations have provided links to Spanish versions of written materials, to ensure in-depth understanding of those issues.”

Once Trump became president, the White House website no longer provided Spanish language content. Trump had stressed during the Republican primaries that immigrants should learn English and even mocked other candidates for sometimes speaking to voters in Spanish, the Daily Mail reported.

When asked about the issue, the Trump administration has said it is working on restoring the Spanish-language content, although this has yet to be done.

However, Fox News reported that the White House did renew at the beginning of February its Twitter account in Spanish, which had also been deleted when Trump was sworn in as president.

In the meantime, without the Spanish content on the White House website, the translation company Transfluent has created an up-to-date Spanish translation of the site.

Transfluent’s founding principle is that everyone has the right to access important information in their own language.
