Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has said he does not want a Cabinet position in the Donald Trump White House, instead preferring to work to help pass Trump's agenda from the outside.
Now, he says, Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence are on board.
"My goal is to be the chief strategist," Gingrich said Wednesday on Fox News Channel's "Hannity," "putting together … the principles of Trumpism and helping people from state legislature to governor, from the House and Senate to the executive branch all move in the same direction with the goal of literally creating a new stable Republican governing majority for the first time since 1932."
Gingrich said he has talked to Trump, Pence and the senior team on the transition – on which he is a vice chairman.
"They all seem comfortable with that role for me," he said. "It's something I did in the Reagan years."
The role would be "perfect" for Gingrich, host Sean Hannity said.
"You could transform every agency in government, every branch in government in a profound way," he told Gingrich.
Gingrich also took a shot at The New York Times, saying the newspaper's concern with "fake news" is "really weird."
"The New York Times is fake news," he said. "And it doesn't change, because all of the copy editors are there that have been there for 20 years. They are as far left as they can get without teaching at Harvard."
