With three political outsiders topping the latest Monmouth University poll of GOP presidential candidates, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who is at the bottom of the list, tells Newsmax TV he is just as much of a stranger to Washington as the front-running trio.

"I've never had a D.C. zip code. Never lived there more than probably three or four nights when I was in a hotel attending a meeting. Never held a job there," Huckabee said Monday on "The Steve Malzberg Show."

"I've governed so I've had the experience that a person needs to be president, but I also would make sure that people understand that if you think I'm a part of that system, then clearly you haven't read some of the editorials that have attacked me because I'm not part of that system."

In a new Monmouth University poll of likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers Huckabee only received 2 percent of the vote. The frontrunner is billionaire developer Donald Trump, followed by retired neurologist Dr. Ben Carson and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.

Regardless of his poor showing in the poll, Huckabee said he plans to soldier on and believes his campaign will pick up steam.

"We're still building great organizations in other early states like South Carolina and Nevada, the southern states like Arkansas, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana. We're not a one-trick pony, but clearly we're in Iowa to win," he said.

"We hope that we win because it gives us a terrific tail wind going into the other contests but I wouldn't say we would base everything just on Iowa but again without any equivocation, we're not just here to be a placeholder. We're here to win this state."

Huckabee is author of "God, Guns, Grits and Gravy," published by St. Martin's Press.
