Former White House counsel John Dean said Wednesday the President Donald Trump would be "on a suicide course" if he fired special counsel Robert Mueller over the Russia investigation.
"That would be a suicide course," Dean, who served in the Richard Nixon White House, told Don Lemon on CNN in an interview.
"He would be in a comparable situation when Nixon was in when he fired Archibald Cox, the special prosecutor that he was dealing with."
Dean was referring to the "Saturday Night Massacre" during Watergate, in which Nixon dismissed independent prosecutor Archibald Cox on Oct. 20, 1973.
The move also brought the resignations of Attorney General Elliot Richardson and Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus.
"That is the sort of thing that would get Congress to act," Dean told Lemon. "That's when people said: 'Hey, this is one step over the line.'
"This is where we're playing with no rules – and they decided to take action," he said, referring to the House of Representatives, which voted to impeach Nixon in July 1974.
He resigned the next month, on Aug. 9.
