Ben Carson is heading up the effort to pick Donald Trump's running mate, and he said Thursday that the presumptive GOP nominee
might even name a Democrat to his ticket.
But
Independent Journal notes that Carson wasn't first out of the gate with such speculation.
Fox News digital politics editor Chris Stirewalt a day earlier speculated about just such a scenario on Fox Radio's "Kilmeade and Friends."
"Donald Trump's answer is to go left, stick with the points he made in his speech," Stirewalt said. "I would say that the correct running mate for Donald Trump, and I've said it before, and I'll say it again, is Jim Webb. Military experience. Democrat. Bi-partisan."
Webb is a former Democratic U.S. senator from Virginia, who ran this election cycle for the Democratic presidential nomination. The Vietnam combat veteran served as Navy secretary and assistant secretary of defense for reserve affairs under President Ronald Reagan.
When he suspended his presidential campaign, he suggested he might run as an independent. In an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Webb said that while he could not support expected nominee Hillary Clinton, Trump was a "maybe."
