Former Heritage Foundation head Jim DeMint is standing by his endorsement of embattled Alabama GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore — and the support could be crucial, the Daily Beast reported.

The former South Carolina Senator, in a statement to the Daily Beast, said the ultimate decision on Moore, who is facing allegations of sexual misconduct from multiple women, is "up to the people of Alabama."

"These are very serious allegations that should cause him to step aside if they are true," DeMint told the Daily Beast. "But he is strongly denying them, and the decision will ultimately be up to the people of Alabama."

The election to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions is Dec. 12; Moore won the GOP primary in October.

DeMint’s support could be significant if Moore is elected to the Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has been a vocal critic of the former judge in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct.

The expulsion proceedings have only been used 15 times in Senate history, the Daily Beast reported.

After his own ouster from Heritage, DeMint founded a nonprofit, the Conservative Partnership, to advise members of Congress and their staff on procedural matters, the Daily Beast reported.
