Chaffetz: Visa Lottery 'Ridiculous'

The diversity visa program that offers a lottery for entry into the U.S. is "ridiculous," said former Congressman Jason Chaffetz, now a Fox News contributor.

"What is the most ridiculous way to pick the next United States citizen, not on merit, not on family, just literally a lottery," Chaffetz said Wednesday on "Fox & Friends."

"Coming to the United States is a privilege," he added.

The former congressman said he's "glad" authorities did not kill Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, the suspect in Tuesday's terror attack in New York City that killed eight people and injured about a dozen others, because information could be gained from him.

"He didn't accomplish his goal, which is to be martyred and killed," Chaffetz said.

Saipov came to the U.S. through the diversity visa program, according to a tweet from President Donald Trump, CNN reported.

Chaffetz said immigration must be reformed to track those who leave and return to the U.S. He also called on reforms to disallow illegal aliens the ability to obtain driver's licenses.

"You can lessen the exposure and the vulnerability by doing some simple things, some sober things, in making sure that we have an entry/exit program, that we're bringing people here that have business ties and some skills or have some family ties," he said.

"And if you do commit a crime, then we have got to get rid of these people."

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., said in a tweet that a Senate bill would have done away with the visa lottery program if it had passed the House.
