Democratic Rep. Rush Holt has just put out his first television ad for the Democratic primary campaign in the New Jersey Senate race, saying his opponent Cory Booker is "no progressive."
The ad takes aim at Booker, the Newark mayor and the front-runner in the primary, which is scheduled for next Tuesday. The ad is set to run in the New York and Philadelphia TV markets – both broadcast and cable channels – for the next week,
The Hill reports.
In the spot, Holt portrays himself as the true progressive in the race. The ad is filmed in a science lab, playing off Holt's past as a physics professor.
"We need to pass a carbon tax to stop climate change, break up the Wall Street banks and stop the government spying on innocent Americans," Holt says in the ad. "Cory Booker doesn’t support any of these ideas."
Holt gives a little twist to the standard approval message at the end of political ads. "I approved this message because Cory Booker may be the front-runner in this race, but he's no progressive," Holt says.
Polls indicate Booker holds a commanding lead in the race. A
Quinnipiac survey of Democratic voters, conducted July 2-7, shows Booker leading with 52 percent support, followed by Rep. Frank Pallone with 10 percent and Holt with 8 percent.
