The election results from Tuesday could end up complicating the push for Republican-led tax reform in Congress, Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah said.

"I mean, it could, because the elections went against the Republicans," said Hatch, chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Chairman.

His comments were reported by The Washington Post.

Asked if he felt pressured to push the tax plan's benefit more to the middle class, he added: "I think we've been moving that way anyway."

And Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., speculated "substantial change is coming" to the House bill partly as a result of the elections.

Democrats maintain the tax plan is a giveaway to the wealthy. Citing the election results, they are warning of a middle-class backlash., according to the newspaper.

As Republicans try to keep the House tax bill on track, GOP lawmakers in the Senate planned to release their own tax bill on Thursday, the newspaper said.

But amid the Republican losses in Tuesday's election, Democrats are urging GOP lawmakers to negotiate with them regarding tax reform.

"What are they afraid of?" Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said. "They have the majority. It's not like we can buffalo amendments through unless we can convince them it's a good idea."

And Senate Minority Leader Church Schumer, D-N.Y., warned Republicans to pay attention to election results, according to the HuffPost.

"If you think the results (in Tuesday's elections) were terrible for you, wait till you pass a bill that raises taxes on middle-class families in your district," he said.

But Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y. noted GOP lawmakers have no choice but to approve a tax proposal.

"The pressure is so intense, I don't think you could put more pressure on us," Collins said.
