The Republican Party is at its strongest in 80 years, according to analysis from RealClearPolitics.
By separating partisan control into five categories, presidential, Senate, House, governorship and state legislatures, writers Sean Trende and David Byler concluded the GOP has not been this powerful since 1928.
State legislature has become overwhelmingly Republican-controlled, according to CNSNews, the GOP holds a record 67 of 98 partisan state legislative chambers, twice what Democrats control.
"That's more than at any other time in the history of the Republican Party," according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. "They also hold more total seats, well over 4,100 of the 7,383, than they have since 1920."
"Republicans bested expectations," NCSL policy expert Dan Diorio added. "Having already reached the peak of control in party history, Republicans will maintain a similar level of control in a year when many Democrats are expected to net seats and chambers."
"Republicans grabbed more of America's statehouses and governors' mansions during the Obama administration than at any time in the modern era," The Washington Post reported.
Despite Republican's advantage, the index does not spell doom for Democrats.
"The party that holds the presidency almost always loses strength, but the magnitude of that loss and how quickly it occurs is effectively random," Trende and Byler wrote. "Democrats should not be too discouraged by their present state of affairs. History teaches that it can be reversed, and rather quickly."
