Former President George W. Bush said recently he fears for the future of the Republican Party.

According to Politico, Bush told former aides at an April gathering, "I'm worried that I will be the last Republican president."

The remark came at a time when there were two top contenders in the Republican race for president: Donald Trump and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Tuesday night, Trump is expected to be named the party's presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. That isn't sitting well with several established Republicans, both politicians and private citizens alike.

The Bushes, including both former presidents and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, will not be at the convention this week. Neither will Ariz. Sen. John McCain and Mitt Romney, the 2008 and 2012 Republican presidential candidates. In total, 99 top Republicans have opted to skip the convention this week.

Trump's improbable rise in the political arena has gone against the grain of what many Republicans feel is right within their party. But when faced with the possible presidency of Democrat Hillary Clinton, party members such as House Speaker Paul Ryan have jumped aboard the Trump train — whether they like it or not.
