Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton are in a statistical tie in a four-way race for president, as Trump has picked up a few percentage points, according to a Fox News poll released Wednesday.
The poll, which includes Libertarian Gary Johnson and Green Party candidate Jill Stein, looks like this:
- Clinton: 41 percent
- Trump: 39 percent
- Johnson: 9 percent
- Stein: 4 percent
That puts Trump within the poll's 3-point margin of error.
It is the first time the Fox poll has included third-party candidates, and shows Johnson and Stein pulling most support from Clinton. Respondents were asked after they gave their choices in the four-way poll to choose only between Trump and Clinton. In that race, Clinton leads Trump 48 percent-42 percent.
Clinton led the same poll by 10 points earlier in August (49 percent-39 percent.)
But while Trump is gaining in the overall poll, Clinton leads him on issues, including on terrorism (49 percent-46 percent.) They are tied on handling the economy at 48 percent.
Respondents by far disagree with Trump's plan for a mass deportation of illegal immigrants. By 77 percent to 19 percent, they favor a system to allow most illegal immigrants to stay.
The poll talked to 1,011 registered voters nationwide by landline and cell phone between August 28 and 30.
