Doug Jones, the Democratic candidate for the open U.S. Senate position in Alabama, said he supports a woman's right to abortion until the baby is born.

"I'm not in favor of anything that is going to infringe on a woman's right in her freedom to choose," Jones, a former U.S. Attorney, said Wednesday on MSNBC's "Meet the Press Daily." "That's just the position that I've had for many years. It's the position that I continue to have.

"Once a baby is born, I'm going to be there for that child," he said. "That's where I become a right-to-lifer," Jones added in the interview.

The former U.S. attorney said he would support access to measures such as contraception and abortion.

"I'm a firm believer that a woman should have the freedom to choose what happens to her own body," Jones said.

"I want to make sure that as we go forward, people have access to the contraception, to the abortion that they might need, if that's what they choose to do," he added.

Jones will face Republican nominee Roy Moore, who won a runoff Tuesday for the Senate position in a special Dec. 12 election.
