Following Wednesday's announcement by Ted Cruz
that Carly Fiorina would be his running mate if he wins the GOP presidential nomination, LawNewz.com, a part of Mediaite, reposted a story from last month
raising questions about a curious donation from a Cruz-supporting super PAC to a Fiorina-backing super PAC last summer.
Keep the Promise I, one of a group of Cruz super PACs, gave $500,000 to CARLY for America back in June. That was far more than Keep the Promise I gave to help Cruz
– a mere $36,000 in the same period.
The donation seemed curious at the time, especially since Fiorina was still a fierce competitor in the race against Cruz. The Federal Election Commission asked what the donation was for.
The PAC's president, Kellyanne Conway, told CBS it was given "because we thought she had important things to say that weren’t being heard."
"Do you seriously believe that a group that was pushing for Cruz to be president several months ago would want to help his rival, Carly Fiorina? That makes no sense," Rachel Stockman writes at LawNewz.
But a recent amended FEC filing by the PAC raises more question, Stockman says.
The original filing listed the donation as "other disbursement," but now reads "transfer to IE only committee." That means a super PAC, LawNewz, says, adding that legal experts say the gift should probably be listed as a donation rather than a transfer.
Cruz and Fiorina have a history — before Fiorina publicly endorsed Cruz — of not liking each other, which makes the donation even more curious, LawNewz says.
Stockman notes that Donald Trump supporter Roger Stone brought up the donation as Cruz faced allegations of carrying on multiple affairs last month. One of the women supposedly involved works for the Fiorina campaign.
"Can you say hush money?" Stone asked.
While that is proof of nothing, Stockman says, she points to Cruz at the time being asked about the affair allegations by a reporter when Fiorina stepped in and answered instead.
Asked for comment, Keep the Promise I simply noted previous statements that although the PAC supports Cruz, it "will offer support to other candidates."
