Ted Cruz: Time for Lawmakers to Honor Repeal Promises

Republican lawmakers have promised "over and over again" to repeal Obamacare, and now the legislation to do that needs to happen, Sen. Ted Cruz said Friday.

"We made the promise over and over again," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.

"We said, 'give us the House.' They did. 'Give us the Senate.' The voters did. 'Give us the White House.' We have got to deliver now."

Cruz, along with Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, introduced the Consumer Freedom Amendment, which they said would give Americans more choices while shopping for healthcare plans.

He said Friday that he still believes there is a path to pushing through legislation, as there is a "lot of common ground" among senators.

"There is a handful of holdouts, still," said Cruz. "I believe we can come together. I think we have to."

The "Cruz Amendment" has come under fire for its call to allow insurers to offer plans that do not comply with Obamacare mandates, and he said Friday he believes that is "exactly the path to success."

"What I've been urging my colleagues, the way we come together, the way we bring together senators across the ideological perspective, is to focus on lower premiums," said Cruz.

Obamacare, has made premiums skyrocket, he continued, and lower premiums and more competition will allow buyers more freedom.

The Consumer Freedom Amendment, said Cruz, gives consumers to choose the health insurance they want.

"If you want to buy a plan subject to all the Obamacare mandates, you can buy that," he said. "They will be on the market, offered, that choice is there for you. But you should have the choice to buy other plans not mandated by the federal government."

More than two million people will get coverage through the amendment, Cruz said, quoting a study from the Department of Health and Human Services, and the addition will drive down premiums $7,000 a year, "a lot of money for a family that is struggling."

There is good reason for people to be frustrated, however, Cruz said.

"We have politicians who campaign promising one thing, they do something different in office," said Cruz. "What I'm urging my colleagues, it is not rocket science. Let's do what we said we would do. Follow through on the commitment."

The senator said he's had many discussions about the amendment with President Donald Trump about the measure, and he's been helpful.

"He held a Senate Republican conference," Cruz said. "The message was pretty simple, get it done. Stop messing around. Stop bickering, get it together and get it done."
