The Trump administration may reduce the number of refugees admitted to the country over the next year to under 50,000, the lowest number since at least 1980, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

The Times cited "current and former government officials familiar with the discussions."

Under the Refugee Act of 1980, the White House must set the determination for refugee admissions every year — and Trump capped the number at 50,000 in January when he issued his executive order banning travel from seven majority-Muslim countries.

The 50,000 figure was less than half the 110,000 refugees former President Barack Obama recommended for admission in 2016.

But as the deadline nears, Stephen Miller, Trump's senior adviser for policy, is leading the debate in the White House to reduce the numbers even lower, the Times reported.

The discussion comes as the Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted restrictions on revised order he signed in March that banned travelers from six nations — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — for 90 days and locked out most aspiring refugees for 120 days.

The court will hear arguments on the constitutionality of Trump's order next month.

Miller is also backed by the Department of Homeland Security, which is citing security concerns and limited resources as grounds for cutting admissions, while the National Security Council, the State Department and the Defense Department oppose a huge drop, The Times reported.

Representatives for the White House, as well as DHS and Defense, declined to comment — saying that no final number has been set.

Under the Refugee Act, the president must consult with Congress and decide the refugee admission number by the start of each fiscal year, Oct. 1.
