Donald Trump Wednesday insisted that his statements accusing Hillary Clinton of playing the "woman card" for votes are not sexist, but "very, very true."
"If she were a man she'd get 5 percent," the GOP front-runner, coming off a landslide five-state win in Tuesday's primary elections, told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on the
"Good Morning America" program.
"She is a flawed candidate . . . she's not going to do very well in the election, and I look forward to showing her that."
Stephanopoulos pointed out that Clinton has gotten 12 million votes, but Trump responded that "even Bernie Sanders said she has had bad judgment. That's a big statement to make. That's a statement worse than many of the statements I've made against people I'm running against."
On Tuesday night, while making his victory speech in New York, Trump commented that Clinton's only card "is the woman's card. She's got nothing else going on. And frankly, if Hillary Clinton were a man, I don't think she'd get 5 percent of the vote. The only thing she's got going is the women's vote. And the beautiful thing is that women don't like her."
Wednesday, Trump repeated to Stephanopoulos his contention that women don't like Clinton and that he did well with the female vote.
"The women gave me great marks and a great percentage, but women do not like Hillary Clinton," Trump said. "That's been a known fact for a long time and she's going out there playing the women's card. In fact, she gets up and says, 'I'm a woman, that that's what separates me,' so she has every right to be attacked on that front.
"She gets up and all she's saying is 'I'm a woman, I'm a woman' and she didn't play that card too much with [Barack] Obama, probably made a mistake not doing it, but she's playing it against us."
Stephanopoulos told Trump that Clinton does better in national polls than he does with women, and Trump responded that he hasn't really started campaigning against her yet.
"You know, polls showed that Jeb Bush did better than me and he failed and polls showed all these people I played, that I did, that I won against, 17, that many of them did better than me and by the end I was much better than them and they left the race one by one," said Trump.
"Now I have Hillary is going to be the next one and I look forward to taking her on. I think she'll be much easier than many of the governors and senators I knocked out."
Trump said he is not worried about the buzz that rival Ted Cruz may pick former GOP candidate Carly Fiorina as his running mate, but he thinks the Texas senator is wasting his time "because he won't be the nominee."
"I think it would be a bad choice, I mean Carly did not resonate, not because she's a woman," said Trump. "She had one good debate, not against me, she had the debate on the other stage, if you'll remember.
"Remember we had so many candidates ahead of us on that stage, but she had the one good debate she went up then she dropped like a rock. I like Carly, nice person, but she never resonated. "
But on
Fox News' "Fox & Friends," Trump said "it's possible" that he'd consider a female running mate, when asked if he'd choose a woman to counter Clinton.
"There are a couple that are really very good," said Trump. "It's possible. I don't know that it counters her gender . . . Hillary Clinton is playing the woman's card to a fare thee well."
