Senate Democrats are planning a work slowdown to protest the secrecy surrounding the GOP effort to repeal and replace Obamacare – even as Republican leaders are pressing to have a bill ready for a vote as soon as next week, The New York Times reported.

Democrats worry the final bill will have big changes and limited debate if it is brought up before the July 4 recess, and they hope pressure over the break will weaken support, the Times reported.

"If Republicans won't relent and debate their healthcare bill in the open for the American people to see, then they shouldn't expect business as usual in the Senate," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said, per the Times, calling the slowdown "merely the first steps we're prepared to take in order to shine a light on this shameful Trumpcare bill."

According to the Times, the Senate bill would give states sweeping new authority to opt out of federal insurance standards established by Obamacare – going further than the House-passed bill in giving states latitude to regulate their health insurance markets.
