President Barack Obama’s assertion that a Supreme Court overturn of his healthcare law would have been an “unprecedented” move was a ploy to put pressure on the justices, GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney tells Newsmax.TV.
Romney was referring to Obama’s controversial comments in April when he said, “Ultimately, I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.”
“Well he knows better of course,” Romney said. “He knows that since Marbury v. Madison in 1805 the Supreme Court has regularly from that time on overturned pieces of legislation that were deemed to be in of violation of the Constitution. That’s part of the role of the Supreme Court, he knew that.

“He was trying in every way he possibly could to signal that if the Supreme Court didn’t go along with him on Obamacare that it would be a very conflict-filled summer and he got what he wanted.
"I can’t say that’s why they made the decision they made, but I can say he’s happy that Obamacare didn’t get overturned. At the same time I think the American people recognize we must now urgently repeal it in the one way that’s left and that is by replacing president Obama.”
Romney, who is worth over $200 million, declined his salary when he was governor of Massachusetts and donated his salary when he headed up the Olympics to charity. However, he would not say what he would do with the $400,000 a year salary he would receive should he win the presidency.
“I’m not going to make any commitment on that, that’s something that may occur down the road,” he said. “I do believe there should be a connection between the compensation of those who serve in government and the kind of job they’re doing and of course the kind of circumstance the nation is in.

“I anticipate helping preside over an extraordinary resurgence of America’s economic vitality. I think you’re going to see if we take a different course than the one we’re on you’re going to see jobs come flowing back to this country and wages rising again. But how to connect compensation with that is something we’ll leave for another day.”
