Paul Ryan: 'We're On a Rescue Mission' for Obamacare

("Today")

Republicans are on a "rescue mission" for the Affordable Care Act, House Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday.

"Obamacare is collapsing. I think the Democrats got too far ahead on their ideology. They gave us a system where government runs healthcare," the Wisconsin lawmaker told NBC's "Today" show.

"They gave us a system where costs went up, not down. They gave us a system where choices went away. They gave us a system where people lost the health care plans that they liked, that they chose, that violated all the promises that were made, that were given when Americans were sold on Obamacare.

"Now we have a collapsing marketplace," Ryan continued. "We really believe we're on a rescue mission here to step in and prevent this collapse from occurring."

On entitlement reform, Ryan said that Republicans are focused on getting the programs ready for future retirees, and he said he believed President Donald Trump would agree that it is important to leave in place entitlements for seniors and those who will retire soon.

Ryan praised the new Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, calling him "the gold standard reformer for health care."

He also said that President Trump is better at delegating to experts instead of focusing on details.

"I see him as more of a chairman... who gets people around him who are detail people, who are able to execute those plans."

Republican leaders are aiming to push through the repeal of Obamacare, believing such a move will break up intra-party disagreement over the details, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.
