Sen. McCain: 'Withdrawing From NAFTA Would Be Disaster'

Sen. McCain: 'Withdrawing From NAFTA Would Be Disaster'

By    |   Wednesday, 26 April 2017 05:35 PM

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is urging President Donald Trump not to pull the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement, saying it will be a "disaster" for his state.

The border-state senator's plea comes as a Trump administration official confirmed an earlier report a draft executive order to withdraw from NAFTA with Mexico and Canada is under consideration.

Trump has accused Mexico of destroying U.S. jobs, and this week he set 20 percent tariffs on imports of Canadian softwood lumber as the nations prepared to renegotiate the trade pact.

It is not the first time McCain has voiced concern about Trump's stance on the trade pact. In January, he said he was "deeply concerned" about Trump's talk of renegotiating NAFTA.

"The free flow of trade has been the foundation of U.S. economic policy for decades, and a major factor in our prosperity and greatness," he said at the time. "We should not have to relearn the lessons of history."
