House Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows says the next government spending bill must fund construction of President Donald Trump's border wall, or else there will be a government shutdown.

In an interview with Breitbart News' Washington editor Matt Boyle, Meadows predicted there would be enough Republicans to block any funding package that does not include money for Trump's wall. The spending bill has to pass by the end of September.

"Without a doubt there is enough conservative members who will not support any funding mechanism that does not include border wall funding," the North Carolina conservative told the outlet.

"And it's also even some who are probably even a little bit less conservative as it relates to immigration because it is the major impediment for really fundamentally getting control of what we do from an immigration standpoint."

Meadows told the news outlet his talks with Trump have led him to conclude the president will not sign any government funding bill that does not fund the wall – a key promise all during his campaign.

"My conversations with the president have led me to believe that there is nothing less than a full and total commitment on his part to only sign into law a funding bill that actually allows for us to start construction of a border wall on our southern border," he said.

"He's committed to do that. We're committed to supporting him in that position."
