Gyrocopter Pilot Seeking Primary Bid Against DNC's Wasserman Schultz

Doug Hughes, the postman who was arrested in April after landing his homemade gyrocopter on the Capitol Hill lawn earlier this year has launched a primary campaign to unseat DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz next year and says he's running because she divides the party.

"She's done a horrible job with the DNC and as the head of the DNC she's scheduled only six debates," Hughes told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program. "When you look at the history on it, Hillary Clinton, when she ran last time there were 26 Democratic debates and a guy named [Barack] Obama caught up."

Hughes said that if he is elected, he would try to form a bipartisan caucus to reach out to Republicans, and "I would want to write a pledge on what it exactly means to clean up corruption and end the control of money in Washington D.C."

The Floridian, who landed on the Capitol Lawn in hopes of delivering 535 letters to all of the lawmakers in both chambers of Congress to protest the role of money in U.S politics, pleaded guilty in November to one count of operating a gyrocopter without a license, and faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine, reports The Tampa Bay Times.

However, prosecutors are asking that he spend no more than 10 months in prison, and his lawyers are seeking probation. Hughes' sentencing is set for April 13 of next year.

He was originally charged with two felonies and four misdemeanors, but rejected two prior plea deals. He is also facing a $11,000 fine from the Federal Aviation Administration, and was fired from the U.S. Postal Service for flying through protected airspace.
