House Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California thanked Fox News host Shephard Smith for "telling the truth" about President Donald Trump and how his administration has handled the investigations into claims of Russian meddling in the U.S. 2016 presidential election, The Hill reported Saturday.
In a tweet on Saturday, Lieu wrote, "More liberal propaganda against @realDonaldTrump. Oh wait, this is from Shepard Smith w/ @FoxNews. Thank you Shepard for telling the truth."
Smith served a scathing condemnation for the Trump administration on his show "Shephard Smith Reporting" Friday. He took White House officials to task over their failure to disclose meetings with Russian officials and nationals during the president's 2016 presidential campaign and transition period before he took office.
"Why is it lie after lie after lie?" Smith asked Friday. "If you come on clean — my grandmother used to say, 'Oh, the tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.'"
"The deception, Chris, is mind boggling," he told Fox News' Chris Wallace. "And, there are still people out there who believe we're making it up, and one day they're going to realize we're not."
The list is growing of connections that include administration officials and Trump family members who failed to disclose interactions with Russians. It began with former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who had to resign in February over his failure to disclose the extent of connections and benefits he received from Russian officials and other foreign governments and companies and subsequent denials regarding the information.
Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, who is a senior White House adviser, has held meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, who also interacted with Flynn, as well as the CEO of a Russian state-owned bank. Kushner did not disclose the information until he recently updated his national security questionnaire.
Most recently, Donald Trump Jr. last week revealed he had a meeting with a Russian attorney because he believed she had derogatory information on Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
Trump's former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, also attended the meeting with Trump Jr., as did Kushner.
A report on Friday stated a former Soviet spy, who now works as a Russian-American lobbyist, also attended the meeting, as well as an interpreter. The names of others who might have been present is not known.
